Yes, it does take a bit of getting used to. I have the most trouble getting the rhythm from this notation. I prefer using numeric or staff notation, and don't have the patience for the Vietnamese notation.

I think that the old Vietnamese master teachers teach a phrase at a time, and the student learns mostly by ear. The notation is more of a memory aid than a primary method of learning a tune.

Best wishes,

David

I'm Vietnamese and I'm learn Tranh

I love Guzheng, but in my country very very difficult to learn Guzheng, because we can't find out a teacher or buy a Guzheng.
I hope one day I could become a good Guzheng player.
Return to Tranh, if you true love it; you can learn yoursefl.
The order of Tranh's strings as: (for 17 strings)
Tone C:
G - A - C - D - E - G - A - C - D - E - G - A - C - D - E
You can begin with this strings system.
good luck!
you can see more in this links

Hi Khach:

Welcome to the forum!
I'm currently self-taught on dan tranh. So glad to see a dan tranh player!
Now, I can ask you when I have questions.

This is the same La-pntathonic csale as the yatga's. So dan trahn is also able to play Mongolian and Hungarian pentathonic songs. More than 1000 years ago was a Hungarian zheng-like zither.
There are coloured strings on the dan trahn?
