There are quite a lot of people telling me they are confused on Dunhuang's guzheng model numbers. So, here is a detail explanation. It's actually pretty logical.

The Dunhuang model number always starts with a 3-4 digit number, and ends with one or more letters. For example, the most popular "Duo Crane Facing the Sun" model number 696D starts with a 3 digit "696" and ends with a letter "D". Here the digit number means the type of wood (African Padauk) and soundboard grade (Intertermediate) used, and the letter means the design on it. "D" stands for wood carving design.

When there are multiple letters attached, it means it's a higher grade with signature. For example, 694KK and 694K both use the same Burmese Rosewood, and both has the "K" window carving design. The 694KK uses a higher grade soundboard and has Master Xu's signature at the back. In Dunhuang's definition, 2 letters are always better than the 1 letter of the same model number, and in rare occasions, 3-letter ones are made, and they are considered the very elite and much higher grade than 2-letter or 1-letter of the same model.

Here are the wood definition and grading of the model numbers.

689 - Laminated(Imitate) Burmese Rosewood 仿酸枝- Basic Grade
696 - African Padauk 非檀木 - Intermediate Grade
693 - Black Walnut 黑胡桃 - Intermediate Grade
694 - Burmese Rosewood or Bubinga 缅酸枝/特氏古夷苏木 - Professional Grade

As for the design letters.

O - plain design
T - Bone Powder Inlay
F - Wood Carving directly on the hard wood
P - Painting
B - Chinese Painting & Caligraphy
K - Window Carving
D - Wood Carving
L - Mother-of-Pearl Inlay
J- Silver-thread Inlay
E - Printed Carving

Other than all the above, they also have model "RBGZ" stands for Dunhuang Mitsuya Standard grade Guzheng made in Japan.

As for Dunhuang Yun, they have all the models above as the Dunhuang. In addition, they have a few more model numbers.

896 - Burma Padauk 花梨木 - Intermediate-Professional Grade
894 - Bubinga or Burma Blackwood 特氏古夷苏木或黑酸枝 - Professional - Concert Grade
895 - Thailand Rosewood 老红木 - Concert Collection Grade
898 - Indian Rosewood 紫檀 - Concert Collection Grade
8898 - Madagascar Rosewood 紫檀 Elite

The attached letters have the same meaning as the Dunhuang. Two letters are always better than one letters. Three letters are better than two letters.
