If the Guzheng is based on a 5 note pentatonic scale that starts with D. (D, E, F#, A, B), then what is the thought process behind making the A strings Green? It seems like the D strings should be green to visually allow the player to spot where each new octave begins.

hmmm, interesting question. never thought about that.
well, the older guzhengs are tuned from 5 to 5 over 3 octaves. A lot of traditional pieces is based on 5 melody, meaning the song probably starts on a 5 and ends on a 5.

Thank you for your insight - I was not aware of that. Yes, that does make sense knowing the 5 melody tendency of traditional pieces. However as a beginner, I have to say I wish the D strings were green. Very Happy

Because the coloured string is the base of the instrument's pentathonic scale. The Chinese folksongs are based on Sol (as far as I know) Wietnamese, Mongolian (and also Hungarian) songs are based on La pentathonic scale. It means that, the most of their songs are ended on La ( or Chinese songs on Sol). It is true only for the folk songs, not the written melodies.
